Both airports have free wifi for a limited time, but it can be crowded. Local SIM cards require passport registration, and the process can be slow at the airport. An eSIM already installed means you can book a taxi or check your booking immediately.
Money and public wifi
US dollars are the official currency, and many places accept cards, but small stores and rural markets may only take cash. Public wifi is available in malls and cafes in cities, but less reliable elsewhere. Your eSIM keeps you connected when wifi is scarce.
Travelling to the Galápagos
On the Galápagos Islands, Claro has LTE in the main port towns. On boat trips and uninhabited islands there is no mobile coverage. Download maps, translation apps and travel documents before leaving the main islands.
Will my eSIM work in Ecuador?
Yes. The eSIM connects to Claro, the only network available on this plan. Install it before you fly and enable data roaming to connect automatically after landing.
Is there coverage on the Galápagos Islands?
Claro has LTE in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Elsewhere, including on most cruises and remote islands, signal is absent. Do not rely on mobile data for navigation between islands.
Do I need to register my eSIM with the Ecuadorian authorities?
No. Local SIM cards require registration with an ID, but a travel eSIM is already registered. You can use it as soon as you arrive without visiting a provider.
Can I use this eSIM in the Amazon rainforest?
In towns like Tena and Puyo, there is LTE coverage. In deeper jungle areas, especially along rivers and in lodges, signal is usually not available. Download offline maps and emergency contacts before excursions.
How is coverage on the road between Quito and Banos?
The main road passes through populated areas where Claro has LTE, but you may lose signal in mountain tunnels and remote stretches. Streaming music or video may buffer during the journey.
What happens if I cross into Peru or Colombia?
This eSIM is for Ecuador only. If you cross the border, data will stop working once you leave Claro's network. You would need a separate eSIM for those countries.
